Purpose

Social psychology is the study of the way people think and behave and how their thoughts and behaviors are influenced by the social context--other people and objects in the environment. In this graduate-level course we will survey the theory and research in the major areas of social psychology. I hope to teach students to approach questions about people and their behaviors from the perspective of social psychology. In addition, I would like to provide students with a working knowledge of the important theories and terms in social psychology. Finally, I would like to familiarize students with the research methods and research findings of social psychologists. The brief lecture will be followed by a discussion of the theories and experimental findings. Course requirements will be an open-ended midterm and a final paper. In the final paper students will be asked to write a research proposal in the selected topic. Pre-requirement: Introduction to Social Psychology (Ps241 or an equivalent).
